8 Signs And Symptoms Of Calcium Deficiency You Must Know

Calcium deficiency is a common problem that happens to thousands of people without them knowing about it. This is because symptoms of calcium deficiency are so suppressed that it doesn’t feel like anything major. So how do you know that you lack calcium deficiency? Calcium deficiency can cause different types of health issues and it is important to know some determining factors to be careful of this deficiency. Excessively low levels of calcium in body could result to brittle teeth, problems in nails of finger and toes and blood calcium levels. Let us know about some major symptoms of calcium deficiency. 

What is Calcium Deficiency?

Some people may be confused or unaware about calcium deficiency problem. We spoke to Dr. Sumeet Nigam, General Physician from Sahara Hospital, Lucknow to know about different symptoms of calcium deficiency. He explained that when there is an excessively low level of calcium in the blood, it causes different types of problems in the body that can be either chronic or acute. In some cases severely low levels of calcium can also cause calcium deficiency in people. Calcium is actually the most abundant mineral that is found in our bodies, hence it is vital for functioning of major systems including heart, muscles, bones, etc. Every cell in the body contains calcium in some amount and 99% of it is stored in bones and teeth.

So if there is lack or low levels of calcium in the body it can cause the following conditions-

  • Fatigue
  • Muscle aches
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Memory loss
  • Tingling in hands and feet

Signs and Symptoms of Calcium Deficiency

Hypocalcaemia or calcium deficiency can cause life-threatening complications for the person at times. If left untreated, then it may cause these symptoms-

1. Muscle cramps and spasms

One of the common problems that people face while having calcium deficiency is muscle cramps or spasms. What calcium does is that is helps to contract and relax muscle easily. When muscles lack calcium, then they are no longer smooth functioning that results to frequent muscle cramps, aches, spasms and muscle weakness. These problems could last a life-time if not treated.

2. Numbness and Tingling

Another key symptom of calcium deficiency is tingling and numbness in the feet or hands. This can be a symptom of serious problems and your nerves may have been affected. People having calcium deficiency struggle to register sensations and send signals that they are have problems in their nervous response. Every nerve requires calcium to function properly and lack of calcium causes dysfunction.

3. Fatigue

Having fatigue is a very general symptom that most people can be mistaken with. But in this condition, the fibres of nerves are affected. Therefore you may have fatigue after walking or standing for long. It causes depletion of cells and thus you may get exhausted very soon and weakness may be evident at most parts.

4. Having abnormal heart rhythms

Irregular heartbeats can be typically being a sign of calcium deficiency in severe cases. This is because abnormal heart rhythms are registered by ECG due to deficiency of calcium that supports heart functions. Heart is also a type of muscle organ and hence when cells are not provided with effective calcium, then this problem occurs. Spasms in the heart muscles and narrowing of arteries can cause complications that are result of calcium deficiency in body.

5. Getting seizures

Some people fear having seizures because it is a very threatening symptom. If you are getting seizure, then it means that there are some nervous problems with your brain cells. When neurotransmitters are affected, it makes whole body suffer. Calcium deficiency affects functioning of brain that may lead to seizures and memory loss in further cases. Seek medical attention as soon as possible in this condition.

6. Osteopenia or osteoporosis

Both of these conditions are serious bone health problems that may affect you for life-time. Osteoporosis is having weak or brittle bones due to lack of sufficient amount of calcium in the bones. Osteopenia is also a similar condition with slightly mild symptoms. If you have any of these bone disorders, then it directly means that you are having calcium deficiency in the body. It also drops your blood levels as the body releases more calcium for bones. Over the period of time, without treatment, it can go worse and increase the risk of fractures.

7. Dryness on the skin

Yes, calcium deficiency also causes dryness on the skin because of cell functions. Since calcium supports cell functions, it protects the skin from getting dry. Hypocalcaemia decreases the pH levels of the skin and protects it from skin barrier. The excessive loss of water from the skin is a symptom of calcium deficiency. When it goes far too low, then it results to dryness and flaky skin.

8. Tooth Decay and Gum Diseases

We often relate calcium deficiency with teeth and it is quite true. Since teeth are made up of calcium, therefore loss of calcium from the body can cause tooth decay and cavities very easily. Also people having calcium deficiency are more likely to have gum problems and bacterial growth in their teeth. Inadequate amount of calcium causes mineral loss and increase teeth problems and gum diseases.
